A two week topic

This “Pattern Colour and Shape” disk is related to the "Colour Shape and Texture" and the "Shape, Space and Measures" topics in that they all cover similar areas of the EYFS curriculum. Of course, with one or two exceptions, the activities on all three disks are different, so you could combine them all for a very much longer theme. In smaller settings where children join you at different times of the year, it would be preferable to space the topics out over one or two years to ensure that you are offering a balanced curriculum to all the children.

This CD has 20 planned activities which have all been tried, tested and enjoyed by lots of 3 to 5 year olds. A good balance of the favourites has been put together and then linked to the EYFS curriculum. The starting point for each themed disk is the child and the experiences that he or she enjoys. On each topic disk is a sheet which shows the areas of the curriculum covered. As you are doing your long term planning you can then compare each topic and create an overall balanced curriculum which clearly ties in with the EYFS.

The activities on this CD are great fun! Children design their own pants in all sizes, shapes and patterns and they enjoy a variety of funny stories about them such as “Pants” by Giles Andreae and “The Queen’s Knickers” by Nicholas Allen. The plans encourage children to look carefully at snails and the spiral pattern on their shells. The properties of 3D shapes are investigated while rolling balls to knock down skittles or build models with junk materials.

As usual, some of the plans are “one off” circle time games or stories, others form introductions to much longer in depth experiences which the children can develop and follow over time according to their individual interests.
