Fairy Stories is a three week topic suitable for any time of the year.
All the stories included in the plans are followed up by exciting practical activities. For example “The Elves and the Shoemaker” is a prompt for a role play shoe shop, “The Three Little Pigs” is a stimulus for house building, and of course there has to be planting beans, making gingerbread and tasting porridge!
Counting activities are always part of the planning. In the first week the children search for and count lost hares and tortoises, match numerals to sets of turnips, and pay for shoes in the shoe shop. In week two they count gingerbread men on simple worksheets and in the third week they cut out pictures of bears to make sets.
As with all the disks, each week of the Fairy Stories theme focuses on one letter and its sound. The letters on this disk are E P and V. The emphasis is on exploring instruments and the different sounds they make. There are many suggestions to develop mark making skills and pencil control and activities which encourage older children to link letters and their sounds.
