A three week topic

The activities on this “Exploring Materials” disk are most suitable for children aged 3 and 4 but they can be adapted for 2 and 5 year olds quite easily. Depending on the size of your setting, these should keep the children interested and stimulated for at least three weeks. Some activities are short and will probably only take place on one occasion. Others experiences are longer and more challenging and could be extended over several weeks. All the plans can easily be changed to include any special features of your setting or particular interests of the group.

“Exploring Materials” is very much a hands on science based topic and it balances very well themes such as Fairy Stories or Nursery Rhymes. Activity plans include investigating the properties of materials such as water and then finding out what happens when we heat them or make them cold. Many of the plans encourage the children to explore and find out for themselves how things such as magnets work and so they need time to revisit and to experiment with them in different ways.

Included on the disk are blank planning sheets so you can include some of your favourite activities in the same format. You might be brave enough to include fire in your plans!
