The activities on this “Autumn” disk are suitable for children aged 2 – 5. Depending on the size of your setting, these should keep the children interested and stimulated for at least four weeks. Any part of these plans can be used independently; they can be stretched over a longer period of time or adapted to include any particular interests.
“Autumn” is very much a theme of change and celebration. Activity plans include investigating the changes in weather and how this affects our choice of clothes. As the rain comes down, the concept of waterproofing becomes important and activities include investigating umbrellas. Many of the plans encourage the children to look around them for changes. Walks around the setting help them to notice that the leaves on many of the trees are turning brown and falling to the ground. The wonderful story “Leaf Man” forms the stimulus for creating patterns and pictures with leaves. With the help of stories and songs, children can learn about seasonal changes which happen year after year such as migrating birds and hibernating hedgehogs.
Children have the opportunity to learn about harvest time, Halloween and bonfire night and to begin to understand that different families celebrate in different ways. Children can experience building scarecrows, making pumpkin lanterns and apple pies.
The “Autumn” disk features the letters H, U, L and A.
